I’ve spent a large portion of my life trying to leave Winnipeg.

It’s an odd thing for someone in my position to say, I know. I mean, I love this city. I love Manitobans and their tenacity (only truly brave souls continue to live in a city whose temperature soars from -40 degrees to +40 degrees regularly – and keep smiling about it.) In fact, I’m writing this blog about all of the great things to do in Manitoba.

But it’s true. I moved here when I was young from Montreal, and growing up I missed the mountains, and the excitement of the big city. I grew up happily in Winnipeg, but secretly thinking there was more out there for me.

So I packed up my backpack and left. I explored different countries and cultures, but nothing ever seems right. How could I learn so much about other cultures while ignoring my own?

So that’s why I’m here. I love Manitoba, and this winter, I’m going to experience all that it has to offer. Winnipeg was recently named the Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010, and I’m going to see why. Over the next few months, I’ll go to everything I can – art shows, concerts, poetry readings, ballet, comedy nights, symphony performances, and one-man-bands. My goal? To take full advantage of the Cultural Capital I live in, and grow to truly appreciate this province.

And to have so much fun, I forget about the frostbite warnings.
