A River runs through it….God’s River Lodge!
Over 50 years ago a local trapper, with the help of a small group of local Cree people, ventured out on God’s Lake and found the pristine point they now call God’s River Lodge.
After a scenic hour and a half flight my camera man and I arrived at God’s River Lodge and were greeted by the lodge’s General Manager James McKay immediately. James filled us in on the game plan and gave us a quick tour of the facility and main lodge. The main lodge had mounts of some of the huge lake trout, northern pike, walleyes and brook trout that inhabit the waters of God’s lake and God’s River. Ah the brook trout! That was our target species for this trip. James keeps a log of all the trophy fish that are caught and released over the season. This list is kept in the main lodge for all the guests to see. I counted over 240 trophy brook trout that had already been caught and released in just over one month. That’s not including the dozens of trophy lake trout, walleyes and northern pike. 240 trophy brook trout! Now that is a world class brook trout fishery! God’s River is also rated as one of the top 5 wild and natural brook trout fisheries in the world.
I could hardly wait to hit the river and start searching for some of these world class trophy brook trout. Once unpacked and settled into our very spacious and modern cabin it was down to the docks to meet our guide for the next couple of days. Donald met us with a smile, filled us in on the game plan and quickly had us down river to one of his hot spots. After an hour or so I managed to hook up with my first trophy brook trout. The colours on these fish are absolutely amazing. Not only were the brook trout amazing but let’s try and describe the river. Words cannot describe it. Every bend in the river had rapids and small waterfalls, the water was so clear and pristine you could see 20ft down. We were able to watch 5-6 trophy brook trout resting in the current, scratching themselves on the rocks. We could see walleyes stacked up on one single weed patch. In the slack water areas northern pike were sitting there waiting for a quick meal. We were able to watch everything that was happening under the water and we were even able to watch fish smash our lures under the boat. It was spectacular! Our guide, Donald, was a real pro at navigating the treacherous and fast moving water. He went up and down the river and got us into places I would never have dreamed of trying to fit a boat in. Donald has been guiding on the river since he was 11 years old and knew every crook and cranny the river had to offer. That in itself was amazing.
Every morning started off with hot coffee and our choice of breakfast then it was off fishing for whatever species we choose. We would target lake trout in the mornings, then walleyes for shore lunch, a little northern pike here and there and brook trout pretty much the rest of the time. What a choice and all on one river! After a great day of fishing it was back to the main lodge for some appetizers and another hearty meal and a chance to talk about the days fishing with the rest of the guests. We heard the stories about the big ones that got away and we heard about the fish of a lifetime other guests had caught during their trip. All in all it was a trip I will remember for a very long time and not just for the fishing. The history and beauty of the river was something to behold, simply breathtaking!
God’s River Lodge is located 365 air miles north northeast of Winnipeg in the heart of northern Manitoba. The river runs out of God’s Lake which covers 1300 square miles of pristine wilderness and is fed by over 40 rivers and streams. There is however only one outlet…the mighty God’s river.
