If you like catching 20-30 lb, or BIGGER, catfish then get yourself to Cats on the Red in Lockport,  Manitoba! All you have to do is pick up the Manitoba Master Angler book and the proof is plain as day.

“Nowhere else can you compare the size and abundance of these trophy sized channel catfish.”

I have fished the Red River from top to bottom and there is nowhere in North America where you can consistently catch MONSTER channel catfish each and every trip. For your chance to do battle with these tenacious mounds of muscle all you have to do is visit Cats on the Red in Lockport,  Manitoba. Yes it’s that easy!

I arrived at Cats on the Red early Tuesday am and was immediately greeted by the owner Stu McKay. Stu has owned and operated the lodge for as long as I can remember and he has been instrumental in helping the mighty Red River maintain its status as the catfishing capital of North America.

Our day started off a little slow but after changing our bait from whole shrimp to fresh cut Goldeye we started to catch almost immediately. Chanel catfish go absolutely crazy when hooked and reeling them in is a work out in itself. Just when we thought we had the fish tired out and ready to scoop up with our net, the fish would take one look at the boat and peel off another 30 yards of line. By this time my arms are burning and my fishing rod and reel are being worked to their limits.

While visiting with Stu, many of his clients would come in off the water and share their stories of the big fish they had caught. One guest had been coming to the lodge for over 22 years and can’t even remember just how many trophy catfish he and his wife have caught over the years but they sure remember the really big ones. A trophy channel catfish (or master angler) is 34 inches. Now that’s a big fish, but when guests are mentioning that they caught 39-40 inch catfish… those are MONSTER fish! The all-time Manitoba record catfish is 46.50 inches..now that’s HUGE!

After a hard day of fighting these freshwater sharks my cameraman and I enjoyed a home cooked meal and a cold drink, shared our fishing stories with the other guests of Cats on the Red and left feeling very proud to have an unbelievable fishery 20 minutes from home. Stu has has said for years that “No other fresh water fishery on the planet can produce as many pounds of fish in a single day as the mighty Red River!” He is not kidding!
