Some nights, everything goes according to plan. Other nights, Winnipeg serendipity has a way of creating absolute havoc.

On Monday night, J.D. Edwards and band were playing a show at the West End Cultural Centre. I was pretty excited about this show, because I like live music, and I hadn’t seen the remodeled WECC yet. Also, I went to school with a member of the band and was hoping to catch up with her and hear her sing.  And the concert was great – so I heard. I, unfortunately, was not there. I was stuck behind a train on Waverley.

Waverley and Taylor, to be exact. That intersection is one of my least favourites in the city. I’d love to see an overpass there, because when there’s a train, it shuts down the street for what seems like eons, and there’s nowhere to go.

On that fateful night, I was coming from work to swing by my house in Osborne Village, pick up some friends for the concert, and then head down to the venue. Admittedly, I was running a little late, but I still had enough time to make it before the show started.

Until I hit the train.

I waited behind the chugging behemoth for nearly 15 minutes, singing along to the radio and trying to remember the phone number for the person I was supposed to be picking up. I couldn’t remember the number. I started rooting around in my purse for the number, but still nothing. I realized that I had no way to get in touch with this person, who at this point was probably waiting for me, cursing my name to the heavens. This is when I started getting agitated, and stopped singing along to the radio.

When I finally got free from the train, I hurried straight over to my friend’s place. When I got there, a note was pinned on the front door.

“Emily – I wasn’t sure where you were but I got a ride to the show with (friend). I have your ticket, so just call me when you get there and I’ll meet you at the door.”

At this point, you’ll remember that I didn’t have that phone number. So I didn’t get that ticket, and I didn’t see the show.

On the way home, I decided to stop in at Cousin’s diner on Sherbrooke, and happened to run into some friends of mine. We had some veggie burgers, and a few pints, and I ended up having a great evening.
