Folkie Friends
Manitoban weather. What can you say. Unpredictable and sometimes extreme. But we Manitobans, we’re tough. I’ve been all over Canada, but my faveorite trips have been right here in my home province. In particular, not even half an hour from my home! Every year my friends and I look forward to Folk Fest and not once have we been disapointed. This year was no exception. The excitement was in the air when we arrived at 5 am wednesday morning to line up waiting to get into Birds Hill Park. There was already quite a line up. The sun was peeking up and the air was cold, but you could hear the drums beggining. We had arrived. Four and a half hours later we where finally hauling our gear to our camping spot. We lucked out. Right in the trees. If you’ve ever been camping at Folk Fest, you know the trees are a highly coveted spot. Well our wonderful weekend took a hit on saturday. The weather went foul. Winds like I’ve never seen and thunder, lightning and rain that seemed never to end. We had a moment of doubt, had our weekend been put to a stop? But no. I’ve never been so proud to be a Manitoban as I was that day. People got together and ran about, securing smaller tents and covering fire wood. Helping thier neighbors, and still having a great time. My boyfriend and I have a larger tent, we invited campers around us who where lacking the same shelter from the elements to join us and keep warm. We didn’t leave the tent much that day, but it was one of the funnest Folkie Days I’ve had. The sense of love and community at Folk Fest really makes me proud to be a Manitoban. I’m greatful every year to Manitoba and to Folk Fest for the friends made and the good times had. It’s unforgetable each and every year.
